Sergei recognised the beggar. He told him that he had met him in Sadovya street. Then he had called himself a student. Sergei warned him that he would send for the police. The beggar admitted and told the truth.
Sergei puts him to work
The beggar asked Sergei for work. Sergei asked the beggar to chop wood for him when he asked for work. The beggar agreed to do that work, though unwillingly. The beggar was s taken by Sergei’s servant Olga to the shed. He had to chop woods there. Sergei could see Olga and the beggar in the shed.

He told Sergei that if he had not helped him, he would have still been telling lies. He thanked Sergei and Olga, the cook. He told Sergei that Olga had actually saved him.

Lushkoff told Sergei that Olga would rebuke him. Then she would sit opposite to him and weep. She would call him various names. She would grow sad also. Then she would chop the wood for him. He amazed Sergei by saying that he didn’t chop a single stick of wood for him. Due to Olga’s actions, there came a change in his heart. He was set right by Olga and he won’t forget her. He told Sergei that it was time for the bell. And he departed to the gallery.

वकील सरजई को रोका जाता है।एक दिन वकील सरजई को एक भिखारी द्वारा रोका गया। भिखारी चिल्ला रहा था कि उस पर दया की जाये। वह कह रहा था कि उसके पास खाने को कुछ नहीं है। वह आठ वर्ष से स्कूल अध्यापक था। परन्तु उसने जगह खो दी।
भिखारी का वर्णन
भिखारी चिथड़ों में था। उसकी सुस्त और शराबी आँखें थीं। उसके दोनों गालों पर लाल निशान थे। उसने एक ऊँचा और एक नीचा जूता पहना था।
सरजई द्वारा भिखारी को पहचानना
सरजई ने भिखारी को पहचान लिया। उसने उसे बताया कि वह उसे सदोव्या स्ट्रीट में मिला था। तब उसने स्वयं को एक विद्यार्थी कहा था। सरजई ने उसे धमकाया कि वह पुलिस को बुलायेगा। भिखारी मान गया और उसने सच्चाई बता दी।
सरजई द्वारा उसे काम पर लगाना
भिखारी ने सरजई से काम के लिए कहा। सरजई ने भिखारी को उसके लिए लकड़ी फाड़ने के लिए कहा जब उसने उसे कार्य के लिए पूछा। भिखारी न चाहते हुए वह कार्य करने के लिए तैयार हो गया। सरजई की रसोइया ओल्गा द्वारा भिखारी को सरजई के शैड में ले जाया गया। उसे वहाँ लकड़ियाँ फाड़नी थीं। सरजई ओल्गा और भिखारी को शैड में देख सकता था।
भिखारी कार्य के लिए तत्पर
ओल्गा ने भिखारी को एक कुल्हाड़ी दी। परन्तु उसके चेहरे को देख कर उसने उसे डाँटा फटकारा। भिखारी ने लकड़ी के एक टुकड़े को अपने पैरों के बीच में रखा। फिर उसने अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से इस पर हल्का वार किया। टुकड़ा गिर गया। इस बीच में सरजई चला सा गया। उसने एक बिगड़े हुए और शराबी व्यक्ति को ठण्ड में कार्य करने के लिए लगाया था। उसे इस बात पर दु:ख होने लगा।
भिखारी को भिन्न-भिन्न काम दिये जाते हैं।
सरजई ने भिखारी के लिए काम ढूँढ लिया। भिखारी हरेक महीने के पहले दिन लकड़ी फाड़ता। वह बर्फ को भी हटाता। वह गद्दे और रजाइयों में से धूल को भी झाड़ता। वह लकड़ी के शैड को ठीक करता। सरजई दूसरे घर में गया। भिखारी ने फर्नीचर को पैक किया और उसे उठाकर ले गया।
भिखारी लशकॉफ को दूसरा काम दिया जाता है।
भिखारी लशकॉफ को अब दूसरा काम दिया गया। सरजई ने उसे उसके मित्र के पास जाने के लिए कहा। वहाँ पर उसे नकल करने का कुछ कार्य दिया जायेगा क्योंकि वह लिख सकता है। सरजई को खुशी थी कि उसने एक व्यक्ति को ठीक रास्ते पर डाल दिया था।
सरजई और लशकॉफ की दो वर्ष पश्चात् भेंट
दो वर्ष बीत गये। एक शाम सरजई एक थियेटर की टिकट की। खिड़की पर खड़ा हुआ था। वह अपनी सीट के लिए पैसे दे रहा था। अपने बराबर में उसने एक छोटे-से व्यक्ति को देखा। वह व्यक्ति घुघराला (मुड़ा हुआ) फर और सील की खाल की घिसी हुई टोपी पहने हुए था। सरजई ने उसे पहचान लिया। उसने उसे पूछा कि उसका क्या हाल है।
लशकॉफ अपने बारे में बताता है।
लशकॉफ ने सरजई को बताया कि अब वह एक नॉटरी था। उसे हर महीने पैंतीस रूबल मिलते थे। सरजई को यह सुन कर काफी खुशी हुई। लशकॉफ ने सरजई का जो कुछ उसने उसके लिए किया था धन्यवाद किया। उसने सरजई को बताया कि यदि वह उसकी सहायता नहीं करता तो वह अब भी झूठ बोलती रहता। उसने सरजई और रसोइया ओल्गा का धन्यवाद किया। उसने सरजई को बताया कि ओल्गा ने ही वास्तव में उसे बचाया था।
लशकॉफ रसोइया ओल्गा के बारे में और अधिक बताता है।
लशकॉफ ने सरजई को बताया कि ओल्गा उसे डाँटती-फटकारती। तब वह उसके सामने बैठ जाती और रोती। वह उसे कई तरह की गाली देती। वह उदास भी हो जाती। फिर वह उसके लिए लकड़ियाँ फाड़ती। उसने यह कहकर सरजई को आश्चर्यचकित कर दिया कि उसने उसके लिए लकड़ी का एक भी टुकड़ा नहीं फाड़ा। ओल्गा के कार्य के कारण उसके दिल में एक परिवर्तन आ गया। उसे ओल्गा ने ही ठीक किया और वह उसे कभी नहीं भूलेगा। उसने सरजई को बताया कि घण्टी बज गयी थी। और वह गैलरी की तरफ चला गया।
