Mahendra had a cook named Iswaran. Iswaran had an amazing capacity. He could produce vegetables and cooking things from nowhere. He would conjure up the most delicious dishes made with fresh vegetables within an hour or so. Mahenflra would go to work early in the morning with some food.
Iswaran’s job
After Mahendra’s departure, Iswaran would make up the shed. He washed the clothes. He would take a bath praying. He used to read a Tamil thriller to doze off after lunch. He had a strange method of narrating stories. His stories had the effect of the thriller.

Iswaran had a strange way of narrating even the smallest incident. He would work up in suspense. He would add a surprising end. This was because he was very imaginative. Mahendra would listen to him uncritically.
Iswaran narrates the story of a tusker
One day Iswaran told a story of a tusker. One day a tusker escaped from the timber yard. It roamed here and there. It tore up creepers and broke branches. Iswaran would get so affected with the story that he would jump about here and there.
The tusker creates panic among the people
The tusker reached a town. It smashed all the stalls of fruits .’People ran here and there. The students hid themselves in the classrooms. The streets were empty. Iswaran was then a junior student. He didn’t know what happened to him. He got a cane and followed the elephant.
How Iswaran concludes the story
The elephant grunted and stamped its feet. The people were hypnotised. Then Iswaran struck the elephant’s toenail. It shivered from head to foot and fell down. A veterinary doctor was called. After two days the tusker was taken by the mahout. Iswaran was asked how he did that. He told that he did so with a Japanese art, karate or ju-jitsu etc.
Iswaran’s other story of a ghost
One day Iswaran told Mahendra something about the place. That factory area was once a burial ground. He himself once came across a human skull lying on the path. He also saw ghosts at night. He was not frightened as he was brave. But there appeared a horrible ghost of a woman. It had matted hair and dried-up face. It was ugly. It held a foetus in its arms.
Mahendra’s reaction
Hearing Iswaran, Mahendra shivered. He called Iswaran crazy. He told him that there were no ghosts. These were the product of the mind. He asked Iswaran to get himself medically examined. Mahendra then retired for the night.
Mahendra was affected
From that time Mahendra had unease every night. Every night he peered into the darkness to see if there was any movement. He always liked to admire the sky on full-moon nights. But after Iswaran’s story he avoided looking out of the window.
Mahendra sees a ghost
One night Mahendra was awakened up from his sleep by a moan. It was near his window. He resisted to look out. But the wailing became louder. He looked out. He saw a dark cloudy form. It was clutching a bundle. He perspired and panted. Later, he thought that it might h&ve been some trick from his sub-conscious mind.
Mahendra decides to leave the place
Next morning, Mahendra was ready to go to office. The horror of the night had faded. But Iswaran came to him. He told him about the ghost. He told Mahendra that he also heard the moan the previous night. He saw him (Mahendra) see the ghost himself. A chill went down Mahendra’s body. He went to office the next morning. He handed in his papers. He had determined to leave the haunted place the very next day.

महेन्द्र की नौकरीमहेन्द्र एक कम्पनी में कनिष्ठ सुपरवाईजर था। कम्पनी सुपरवाइजरों को बिल्डिग स्थल, फैक्टरी, पुल, बांध आदि किराये पर कार्य करने के लिए देती थी। महेन्द्र की नौकरी कार्यस्थल के क्रियाकलापों पर नजर रखने की थी। उसे एक जगह से दूसरी जगह जाना होता था। वह कुँवारा था। वह अपने आप को सारे हालातों में ढाल लेता था।
महेन्द्र का आश्चर्यचकित करनेवाला रसोइया ईश्वरने
महेन्द्र का ईश्वरन नाम का रसोइया था। ईश्वर के अन्दर आश्चर्यचकित करने वाली योग्यता थी। वह सब्जियों और पकाने की वस्तुओं को न जाने कहाँ से उपलब्ध कर लेता था। वह एक या अधिक घण्टे में जादुई रूप में ताजा सब्जियों के साथ स्वादिष्ट व्यंजन प्रस्तुत कर देता था। महेन्द्र कुछ खाने के साथ सुबह-सुबह ही काम पर चला जाता था।
ईश्वरन का कार्य
महेन्द्र के चले जाने के पश्चात् ईश्वरन छप्पर को संवारता था। वह कपड़े धोता। प्रार्थना करते हुए वह स्नान करता। दोपहर के खाने के पश्चात् सुस्ताने के लिए वह तमिल भाषा में एक सनसनीखेज पुस्तक पढ़ता। उसका कहानी कहने का अद्भुत तरीका था। उसकी कहानियों में सनसनीखेज पुस्तक का प्रभाव होता था।
ईश्वरन का कहानी कहने का तरीका
ईश्वरन का छोटी से छोटी घटना का वर्णन करने का अद्भुत तरीका था। वह रहस्य में कहानी को कहता। वह इसमें अद्भुत अन्त डाल देता। यह इसलिए था कि वह बहुत कल्पनाशील था। महेन्द्र उसे बिना किसी आलोचना के सुनता।
ईश्वरन एक हाथी की कहानी कहता है।
एक दिन ईश्वरन ने एक हाथी की कहानी सुनाई। एक दिन एक हाथी इमारती लकड़ी के स्थान से बच निकला। यह इधर-उधर घूमता रहा। इसने बेलें उखाड़ दीं और टहनियाँ तोड़ दीं। ईश्वरन कहानी से इतना प्रभावित हो जाता कि वह यहाँ वहाँ उछलने लग जाता।
हाथी व्यक्तियों में दहशत उत्पन्न कर देता है।
हाथी कस्बे में पहुँच गया। इसने फलों की सारी दुकानों को तोड़ दिया। व्यक्ति इधर-उधर दौड़े। विद्यार्थियों ने अपने आपको क्लासरूम में छिपा लिया। गलियाँ खाली हो गईं। उस समय ईश्वरन छोटी कक्षा का विद्यार्थी था। उसने नहीं जाना कि उसे क्या हो गया था। उसने एक छड़ी ली और हाथी का पीछा करने लग गया।
ईश्वरन द्वारा कहानी का अन्त
हाथी ने चिंघाड़ मारी और अपने पैर पटक। व्यक्तियों पर जादू जैसा प्रभाव हो गया था। तब ईश्वरन ने हाथी के अंगूठे के नाखून पर वार किया। यह सिर से पैर तक काँपा और नीचे गिर गया। जानवरों के डॉक्टर को बुलाया गया। दो दिन पश्चात् हाथी को महावत द्वारा ले जाया गया। ईश्वरन से पूछा गया कि उसने ऐसा कैसे किया। उसने बताया कि उसने इसे जापानी कला कराटे या जू-जित्सू आदि द्वारा किया।
ईश्वरन की भूत की दूसरी कहानी
एक दिन ईश्वरन ने महेन्द्र को उस जगह के बारे में कुछ बताया। वह फैक्टरी का स्थान एक समय कब्रिस्तान था। उसके सामने एक बार रास्ते में पड़ी मानव खोपड़ी आयी। रात को उसने भूत भी देखे। उसे डर नहीं लगा क्योंकि वह बहादुर था। परन्तु एक महिला का भयानक भूत सामने आया। उसके बाल उलझे थे और चेहरा सूखा था। वह कुरूप थी। इसके हाथों में एक भ्रूण था।
महेन्द्र की प्रतिक्रिया
ईश्वरन को सुनकर महेन्द्र काँप गया। उसने ईश्वरन को पागल कहा। उसने उसे बताया कि भूत नहीं होते। ये मन की उपज होते हैं। उसने ईश्वरन को अपनी डॉक्टरी जाँच करवाने के लिए कहा। महेन्द्र फिर सोने चला गया।
महेन्द्र पर प्रभाव
उस समय से महेन्द्र को हर रात बेचैनी होती रही। हरेक रात वह यह देखने के लिए कि कोई गति तो नहीं है अँधेरे में घूरकर देखता। पूर्ण चाँदनी रातों को वह हमेशा आकाश की प्रशंसा करना पसन्द करता था। परन्तु ईश्वरन की कहानी के पश्चात् वह खिड़की से बाहर देखने से बचता था।
महेन्द्र एक भूत देखता है।
एक रात महेन्द्र को उसकी नींद से एक कराहट ने जगा दिया। यह उसकी खिड़की के समीप थी। उसने स्वयं को बाहर देखने से रोका। परन्तु रोने की आवाज़ ऊँची हो गयी। उसने बाहर देखा। उसने एक अन्धेरी धुंधली आकृति देखी। उसने एक बण्डल पकड़ रखा था। उसको पसीने आ गये और हाँफने लगा। बाद में उसने सोचा कि यह उसके अवचेतन मन की कोई चाल हो सकती है।
महेन्द्र स्थान को छोड़ने का निर्णय करता है।
अगली सुबह महेन्द्र दफ्तर जाने के लिए तैयार था। रात का भय कम हो गया था। परन्तु ईश्वरन उसके पास आया। उसने उसे भूत के बारे में बताया। उसने महेन्द्र को बताया कि उसने भी पिछली रात कराहट सुनी थी। उसने उसे (महेन्द्र को) भूत को देखते हुए देखा। महेन्द्र के शरीर में ठण्डा करंट सा दौड़ गया। वह अगली सुबह दफ्तर गया। उसने अपने कागज प्रस्तुत कर दिए। उसने अगले दिन ही उस भूतहा स्थान को छोड़ने का निश्चय कर लिया था।
