The Fun They Had Summary In English

Margie writes her diary
Margie even wrote about the book in her diary. On the page headed 17 May, 2157, she wrote : ‘Today Tommy found a real book !’. The real book

It was a very old book. Margie’s grandfather once said that when he was a little boy his grandfather told him about a time, all stories were printed on paper. They turned the pages. These were wrinkled and yellow. The words stood still. They did not move on the screen as they do now.

Telebooks
Tommy called it a waste. When they read the book they threw it away. Their television screen must have been very big to have many books. It was still good for many more books. It was same for Margie, though she had not seen many telebooks.

Margie’s hatred for ‘school’
Margie was eleven and Tommy was thir-teen. She asked him where he had found that book. He replied that he found that in his house. She asked what it was all about. He replied that it was about school. Margie ex-claimed ‘School !’ What was there to write about school as she hated that ?

Why Margie hates ‘school’ ?
She always hated school. But now she hated it more. It was because her mechanical teacher had been giving her test after test in geography. She had been doing worse and worse. At last, her mother sent for the County Inspector.

Television teacher set right
The Inspector was a round little man. He had a red face and a box of tools, dials and wires. He smiled at Margie and gave her an apple. He took the television teacher away. Margie hoped he wouldn’t know how to set it right. But after one hour it was brought again before her with its big screen. Lessons were shown and questions asked on it.

Margie’s learning
She hated its slot in which she had to put | her homework. She had to write them in a punch code. She had been learning since she was six years old.

Geography sector set right
The Inspector smiled and patted Margie’s head. He told Margie’s mother that it was not Margie’s fault. The geography sector was geared a little too quick. He had slowed that ‘ to an average ten-year level. Margie’s progress had been quite satisfactory. Then he went away.

Margie’s wish about her television teacher
Margie hoped that they would take her mechanical teacher away. They had done so to Tommy’s for nearly a month. The history sector of Tommy had blanked out. Margie said to Tommy why anyone would write about school.

Tommy tells her about old schools
Tommy told her that it was not their kind of school. That was a kind of old schools which they had there hundreds and hundreds of years ago.

Margie’s knowledge about old schools
Margie was hurt. She told that she did not know about these schools. She read the book over Tommy’s shoulder. She then said that they had had a teacher anyway. Tommy replied that it wasn’t a regular teacher. It was a man.

Students in those schools
The teacher told the boys and girls things and gave homework. He also asked them questions. Margie told Tommy that man couldn’t be smart enough. But Tommy said he was so.

Old schools explained
Margie was not prepared to dispute that. She said that she wouldn’t want a strange man to live in her house and teach her. Tommy told Margie that the teachers did not live in the house as the mechanical teachers lived. They had a special building. All the kids went there. And they learned the same thing. Also they were of the same age group.

Adjustment of television teacher
But Margie said that as per her mother a teacher had to be adjusted to fit the mind of each boy and girl it taught. So each kid had to be taught differently.

Margie’s schopl time
Margie’s mother Mrs Jones called that it was time for her ‘school’. Margie asked Tommy if she could read the book some more with him after school. Tommy walked away. He had put the dusty old book under his arm.

Margie thinks of old schools
Margie put her work in the slot with a sigh. She was thinking about the old schools. They had them when her grandfather’s grandfather was a kid. All the kids from the neighbourhood came laughing and shouting in the schoolyard. They sat together at the end of the day. They learnt the same things so that they could help one another in their homework. And the teachers were human beings.

Thinking continues
The mechanical teacher was flashing on the screen the fractions of a question. Margie was thinking about how the kids must have loved the school in the old days. She was thinking about the fun they had.

मार्जी का अपनी डायरी लिखना
मार्जी ने अपनी डायरी में भी पुस्तक के बारे में लिखा। 17 मई 2157 वाले पन्ने पर उसने लिखा : ‘आज येमी को एक वास्तविक पुस्तक मिली।

वास्तविक पुस्तक
यह बहुत पुरानी पुस्तक थी। मर्जी के दादा ने एक बार कहा था कि जब वह एक छोटा बच्चा था तो उसके दादा ने उस समय के बारे में बताया था सारी कहानियाँ कागज पर छापी जाती थीं। वे पन्नों को उलटते थे। ये सिकुड़े हुये और पीले थे। शब्द स्थिर रहते थे। वे पर्दे पर हिलते नहीं थे जैसे अब हिलते हैं।

टेली पुस्तकें
टोमी ने इसे फिजूल कहा। जब वे पुस्तक को पढ़ लेते थे तो उसे फेंक देते थे। उनका टेलिविजन स्क्रीन अधिक पुस्तकें रखने के लिए काफी बड़ा होगा। यह बहुत-सी और पुस्तकों के लिये अब भी काफी अच्छा था। यह मार्जी के लिये वैसा ही था यद्यपि उसने ज्यादा टेली पुस्तकें नहीं देखी थीं।

मार्जी की स्कूल से घृणा
मार्जी ग्यारह वर्ष की थी और टोमी तेरह वर्ष का। उसने उससे पूछा कि उसे वह पुस्तक कहाँ से मिली। उसने उत्तर दिया कि उसे वह उसके अपने घर में मिली थी। उसने पूछा वह किस बारे में थी। उसने उत्तर दिया कि यह स्कूल के बारे में थी। मार्जी चिल्लाई ‘स्कूल !’ स्कूल के बारे में क्या लिखने को था क्योंकि स्कूल से वह घृणा करती थी ?

मार्जी ‘स्कूल’ से घृणा क्यों करती है ?
वह स्कूल से हमेशा घृणा करती थी। परन्तु अब वह और भी अधिक घृणा करती थी। यह इसलिए था क्योंकि उसका यान्त्रिक | अध्यापक उसे भूगोल में टेस्ट के बाद टेस्ट दे रहा था। वह बुरे से बुरा कर रही थी। अन्त में उसकी माँ ने काउन्टी इन्स्पेक्टर को बुला भेजा।

टेलिविजन टीचर का ठीक किया जाना
इन्स्पेक्टर एक गोल छोटा-सा व्यक्ति था। उसका लाल चेहरा था और उसके पास औजारों, डायलों और तारों का बक्सा था। वह | मार्जी पर मुस्कुराया और उसे एक सेब दिया। वह टेलिविजन अध्यापक को दूर ले गया। मार्जी ने आशा की कि उसे पता न चले कि उसे कैसे ठीक किया जा सकता था। परन्तु एक घण्टे के पश्चात् यह फिर बड़ा स्क्रीन लिये उसके सामने लाया गया। इस पर पाठ दिखाये जाते थे और प्रश्न पूछे जाते थे।

मार्जी की शिक्षा
वह उसके उस छेद से घृणा करती थी जिसमें उसे अपना गृहकार्य डालना पड़ता था। उन्हें उसे छेदों वाले कोड में लिखना होता था। वह जब छः वर्ष की थी तभी से सीख रही थी।

भूगोल क्षेत्र का ठीक किया जाना
इन्स्पेक्टर मुस्कुराया और मार्जी के सिर को थपथपाया। उसने मार्जी की माँ को बताया कि यह मार्जी का कसूर नहीं था। भूगोल क्षेत्र थोड़ा-सा अधिक तेज हो गया था। उसने औसतन उसे दुस-वर्ष के स्तर पर धीमा कर दिया था। मार्जी की उन्नति काफी ठीक थी। फिर वह दूर चला गया।

मार्जी की अपने टेलिविजन टीचर के बारे में इच्छा
मार्जी को आशा थी कि वे उसके मशीनी अध्यापक को ले जायेंगे। उन्होंने टोमी के अध्यापक के साथ लगभग एक महीने से ऐसे ही किया था। टोमी के अध्यापक का इतिहास का क्षेत्र स्क्रीन से बिल्कुल चला गया था। मार्जी ने टॉमी से कहा कि स्कूल के बारे में कोई क्यों लिखेगा।

टोमी का पुराने स्कूलों के बारे में उसे बताना
टोमी ने उसे बताया कि यह उनके स्कूल जैसा नहीं था। वह तो पुराने स्कूलों की तरह था जो सैकड़ों वर्ष पहले वहाँ हुआ करते थे।

मार्जी का पुराने स्कूलों के बारे में ज्ञान
मार्जी को दुख हुआ। उसने बताया कि वह इन स्कूलों के बारे में नहीं जानती थी। उसने टोमी के कन्धे के ऊपर से पुस्तक पढ़ी। फिर उसने कहा कि फिर भी उनके पास एक अध्यापक था। टोमी ने उत्तर दिया कि यह नियमित अध्यापक नहीं था। वह एक व्यक्ति था।

उन स्कूलों में विद्यार्थी।
अध्यापक लड़के और लड़कियों को चीजें बताता था और गृहकार्य देता था। वह उनसे प्रश्न भी पूछता था। मार्जी ने टोमी से बर, कि कोई व्यक्ति काफी चुस्त नहीं हो सकता था। परन्तु टोमी ने कहा वह ऐसे होता था।

पुराने स्कूलों की व्याख्या
मार्जी उस बात का विरोध करने के लिए तत्पर नहीं थी। उसने कहा कि वह नहीं चाहेगी कि उसके घर में एक अजनबी रहे और उसे पढ़ाये। टोमी ने मार्जी को बताया कि अध्यापक घरों में वैसे नहीं रहते थे जैसे मशीनी अध्यापक रहते हैं। उनका एक खास भवन होता था। सभी बच्चे उसमें जाते थे। और वे एक ही चीज सीखते थे। वे सभी एक ही आयु वर्ग के भी होते थे।

टेलिविजन टीचर का सैट किया जाना
परन्तु मार्जी ने अपनी माँ के अनुसार कहा कि एक अध्यापक को हरेक लड़के और लड़की जिसे वह पढ़ाता है के दिमाग के अनुसार ठीक करना पड़ता है। इसलिये हरेक बच्चे को अलग-अलग पढ़ाना पड़ता था।

मार्जी के स्कूल का समय
मार्जी की माँ श्रीमती जॉन्स ने कहा कि उसके ‘स्कूल’ का समय हो गया है। मार्जी ने टोमी से पूछा कि क्या वह स्कूल के बाद उस पुस्तक को उसके साथ और पढ़ सकती है। टोमी चला गया। उसने धूल भरी पुरानी पुस्तक को अपनी बाजू में दबा लिया था।

मार्जी का पुराने स्कूलों के बारे में सोचना
