Princess September Summary In English

I

King’s Daughters
The King and Queen of Siam had nine daughters. For the Queen it was confusing to remember so many names. So the king decided to call them by the names of the months. The youngest was named September.

The King’s Gifts
The king had a peculiar habit. Instead of receiving gifts on his birthday he gave them. One year he gifted his daughters each with a green parrot in a golden cage. The princesses were glad. They spent an hour every day with them. The parrots could say “God save the king and ‘Pretty Polly’ in seven languages.

The Sad September
But Princess September found one morning her parrot dead. She wept and wept. She could not be comforted. The Queen told the maidservants to put her to sleep without supper. The maids wanted to go to a party. So they put Princess September to bed as soon as possible. Thus the Princess was left alone crying in her bed. The princess saw a little bird come into her room. It began to sing. It sang about king’s garden, the gold fish, the willow tree etc. The princess forgot about her supper.

The Smart Little Bird
The little bird gave the princess a bow. The bird asked her if she would have it in place of her parrot. The bird agreed that it was not pretty. The princess clapped her hands with delight. The bird sang and the princess went to sleep.

The Bird Delights Everyone
The next morning, the bird wished the princess good morning. The princess offered it food with her own hands. She bathed it in her saucer. The Maids of Honour were surprised. They had not heard earlier the sweet song of such a bird. The princess took the bird to her eight sisters. The bird sang different songs to the princesses. The king and the queen were surprised and delighted to see the bird.

The King’s Praise
The king said that the bird sang much better than the parrots. He also said that he did not mind to hear the bird sing. He had got tired of parrot’s saying ‘Pretty Polly’ again and again. The princesses said that the parrots said in seven different languages. The king said that they reminded him of his councillors.

Jealous Princesses
The princesses were vexed at this. The parrots also looked sad. But the bird flew round. It sang like a lark and a nightingale.

The other princesses got jealous of princess September. So they went to September. They said that they were sorry for the death of her parrot. She must have a parrot. They had put their pocket-money together to buy her the parrot. Hearing it, September thanked them. She said that she had a pet bird. It sang the most charming songs to her. She didn’t know what she would do with the parrot.

Confused September
The princesses said that she was wrong in calling the bird as hers. They remarked that the bird flew in and out just as it liked. They asked her where the bird was at that time. September told them that the bird had gone to its father-in-law. The princesses said that is was not likely to come back. If it came back, she should put it into the cage. But September replied that she liked to see it fly. They told her that ‘safety first should be the objective. They went away. Princess September felt uneasy.

II

Worried September
Princess September started worrying about her little bird. It may have been caught in snares. Or the hawks could have caught it. Or it would have forgotten her. But she suddenly saw it sitting on her shoulder. The little bird told September that its father-in-law was giving a party. All wanted it to stay. So it stayed there.

The Bird in the Cage
But Princess September took no chances. She put the bird into the cage. The bird couldn’t believe it. It asked what that joke was. The princess told the bird that it was not a joke. Cats were roaming in the night. The bird would be safe in the cage. The bird sang. But it stopped in between.

The Troubled Bird
The next morning the bird asked the Princess to let it out of the cage. But the Princess told it that it was much better where it was. The bird tried to slip through the bars of the cage. But it couldn’t come out. Other princesses came. They told princess September that the bird would soon get used to the cage. But the bird asked to open the cage.

The Bird Doesn’t Sing
The princess asked the bird to sing. But the bird said that it could not sing. It wanted to see the trees, the lake and the green ricegrowing fields. The bird did not sing. It also did not eat the food. The other princesses told September to be firm with the bird.

The Free Bird
The next day, Princess September went to the cage. She cried to see the bird as it looked dead. But it was not dead. The Princess started weeping. The bird said that it could not sing unless it was free. And if it could not sing, it would die. The Princess set the bird free. She promised it that she would not put it in a cage again.

The Bird’s Word
The bird replied that it loved the Princess. It would come to her. It would sing the loveliest songs for her. It would also never forget her. The bird flew away. But the Princess was sad. She burst into tears.

The Victory of Love
The other Princesses came to know of it. They made fun of princess September saying the bird would never return. But the bird returned. It sat on September’s shoulder. It ate out of her hand. It sang her the beautiful songs. The princess kept her window open day and night. The bird could come and go any time it liked.

The Lucky September
The Princess grew very beautiful. The king married her to the king of Cambodia. She was carried all the way to the city on a white elephant. But her sisters never slept with their windows open. They grew very ugly. The king married them to his councillors. They were given a pound of tea and a Siamese cat each.

राजा की पुत्रियाँ
स्याम के राजा और रानी की नौ पुत्रियाँ थीं। रानी के लिए इतने सारे नामों को याद रखना काफी परेशानी की बात थी। इसलिये राजा ने उन्हें महीनों के नामों से बुलाने का निर्णय लिया। सबसे छोटी का नाम सितम्बर रखा गया।

राजा की भेंट
राजा की एक विचित्र आदत थी। अपने जन्मदिन पर उपहार प्राप्त करने की बजाय वह उपहार देता था। एक वर्ष उसने अपनी पुत्रियों में से प्रत्येक को सोने के पिन्जरे में एक-एक हरा तोता उपहार में दिया। शहजादियाँ काफी खुश थीं। वे उनके साथ हर रोज एक घण्टा व्यतीत करती थीं। तोते सात भाषाओं में कहते थे। ‘परमात्मा राजा को बचाये’ और ‘सुन्दर पौली’।

दु:खी सितम्बर
परन्तु शहजादी सितम्बर ने एक सुबह अपने तोते को मृत पाया। वह रोई एवं रोती रही। उसे शान्त नहीं किया जा सका। रानी ने नौकरानियों को उसे बिना शाम के खाने के सुलाने को कहा। नौकरानियाँ किसी पार्टी में जाना चाहती थी। अत: उन्होंने राजकुमारी सितंबर को शीघ्रातिशीघ्र उसके बिस्तर में पहुँचा दिया। इस प्रकार राजकुमारी बिस्तर में अकेली पड़ी रोती रही। शहजादी ने एक छोटे से पक्षी को अपने कमरे में आते देखा। इसने गाना आरम्भ कर दिया। इसने राजा के बाग, सुनहरी मछली, विल्लो वृक्ष आदि के बारे में गाया। शहजादी अपने शाम के खाने के बारे में भूल गई।

प्यारा छोटा पक्षी
छोटे पक्षी ने शहजादी का झुक कर अभिवादन किया। पक्षी ने उससे पूछा कि क्या वह अपने तोते की जगह उसे रखेगी। पक्षी यह मान गया वह सुन्दर नहीं था। शहजादी ने खुशी से तालियाँ बजाईं। पक्षी ने गाना गाया और शहजादी सो गई।

पक्षी से सब प्रसन्न
अगली सुबह पक्षी ने शहजादी को नमस्ते किया। राजकुमारी ने उसे अपने हाथों से खाना दिया। उसने इसे अपनी कटोरी में नहलाया। नौकरानियाँ आश्चर्यचकित हो गईं। उन्होंने पहले कभी किसी वैसे पक्षी का ऐसा मधुर गाना नहीं सुना था। शहजादी पक्षी को अपनी आठों बहनों के पास ले गई। पक्षी ने शहजादियों को भिन्न-भिन्न गाने सुनाये। पक्षी को देखकर राजा और रानी चकित और खुश हो गये।

राजा की प्रशंसा
राजा ने कहा कि पक्षी तोतों से अधिक अच्छा गाता है। उसने यह भी कहा कि उसे पक्षी को गाते सुनने में कोई ऐतराज नहीं था। वह तोतों को बार-बार ‘पौली सुन्दर’ कहते सुनने से ऊब चुका था। शहजादियों ने कहा कि तोते सात अलग-अलग भाषाओं में कहते हैं। राजा ने कहा कि उन्हें कहते सुनकर उसे अपने सलाहकारों की याद आ जाती है।

ईर्ष्यालु राजकुमारियाँ
शहजादियाँ इस पर नाराज हुईं। तोते भी उदास दिखने लगे। परन्तु पक्षी इधर-उधर उड़ता रहा। यह लॉर्क और बुलबुल की तरह गाता था।

दूसरी शहजादियाँ, शहजादी सितम्बर से ईर्ष्या करने लगीं। इसलिये वे सितम्बर के पास गईं। उन्होंने कहा कि उन्हें उसके तोते की मृत्यु पर दुख है। उसे तोता मिलना चाहिये। उन्होंने एक तोता खरीदने के लिये अपना जेब-खर्च एक जगह इकट्ठा किया था। यह सुनकर सितम्बर ने उनका धन्यवाद किया। उसने कहा कि उसके पास एक पालतू पक्षी है। यह उसके लिये सबसे अधिक मधुर गाने गाता है। वह नहीं जानती कि वह तोते के साथ क्या करेगी।

भ्रमित सितम्बर
राजकुमारियों ने कहा कि उसके द्वारा पक्षी को अपना बताना गलत था। उनका कहना था कि पक्षी अपनी मौज में उड़कर अंदर-बाहर जाता है। उन्होंने उससे पूछा कि पक्षी उस समय कहाँ था। सितंबर ने उन्हें बताया कि वह (पक्षी) अपने श्वसुर से मिलने गया था। राजकुमारियों ने कहा कि उसके वापस आने की संभावना नहीं थी। अगर वह वापस आ जाये तो वह इसे पिन्जरे में बन्द कर दे। परन्तु सितम्बर ने उत्तर दिया कि वह इसे उड़ते देखना पसन्द करती है। उन्होंने उसे बताया कि सुरक्षा पहले’ उद्देश्य होना चाहिए। वे चली गईं। शहजादी सितम्बर को बेचैनी होने लगी।

II

चिंतित सितम्बर
शहजादी सितम्बर ने अपने छोटे पक्षी के बारे में चिन्ता करना आरम्भ कर दिया। इसे शायद फन्दों में पकड़ा जा चुका होगा। या बाजों ने इसे पकड़ लिया होगा। या यह उसे भूल गया होगा। परन्तु अचानक उसने इसे अपने कन्धे पर बैठे देखा। छोटे पक्षी ने सितम्बर को कहा कि उसका ससुर एक पार्टी का आयोजन कर रहा था। सभी चाहते थे कि वह वहाँ रुके। इसलिये वह वहाँ रुक गया।

पिंजरे में पक्षी
परन्तु शहजादी सितम्बर ने मौका हाथ से जाने नहीं दिया। उसने पक्षी को एक पिन्जरे में डाल दिया। पक्षी यह विश्वास नहीं कर सका। उसने पूछा कि यह क्या मजाक है। शहजादी ने पक्षी को बताया कि यह मजाक नहीं है। रात को बिल्लियाँ घूमती हैं। पक्षी पिन्जरे में (बन्द) सुरक्षित रहेगा। पक्षी ने गाया। परन्तु यह बीच में ही रुक गया।

परेशान पक्षी
अगली सुबह पक्षी ने शहजादी से अपने को पिन्जरे से बाहर निकालने के लिये कहा। परन्तु शहजादी ने कहा कि यह जहाँ है। वहीं पर बेहत्तर है। पक्षी ने पिन्जरे की शलाखों के बीच से निकलने की कोशिश की। परन्तु यह बाहर आ नहीं सका। दूसरी शहजादियाँ आईं। उन्होंने शहजादी सितम्बर को बताया कि पक्षी शीघ्र ही पिन्जरे का आदी हो जायेगा। परन्तु पक्षी ने पिन्जरे को खोलने के लिए कहा।

पक्षी नहीं गाता है।
शहजादी ने पक्षी को गाने के लिये कहा। परन्तु पक्षी ने कहा कि यह गा नहीं सकता है। यह वृक्ष, झील और चावल उत्पन्न करने वाले खेत देखना चाहता है। पक्षी ने नहीं गाया। उसने खाना भी नहीं खाया। दूसरी शहजादियों ने सितम्बर को पक्षी के साथ सख्त रहने के लिये कहा।

आजाद पक्षी
अगले दिन शहजादी सितम्बर पिन्जरे तक गई। वह पक्षी को देख कर जैसे कि यह मृत हो चिल्लाई। परन्तु यह मरा नहीं था। शहजादी ने रोना आरम्भ कर दिया। पक्षी ने कहा कि यह तब तक नहीं गा सकता जब तक यह स्वतन्त्र नहीं हो। और यदि यह नहीं गाता तो यह मर जायेगा। शहजादी ने पक्षी को स्वतन्त्र कर दिया। इसने वायदा किया कि वह फिर इसे पिन्जरे में नहीं रखेगी।

पक्षी का वचन
पक्षी ने उत्तर दिया कि यह शहजादी से प्यार करता है। यह उसके पास आयेगा। यह उसके लिये मधुरतम गाने गायेगा। यह उसे कभी भी नहीं भूलेगा। पक्षी उड़ गया। परन्तु शहजादी उदास हो गई। वह रोने लग गई।

प्रेम की विजय
दूसरी शहजादियों को इस बात का पता लगा। उन्होंने शहजादी सितम्बर का यह कह कर मजाक उड़ाया कि पक्षी कभी नहीं आयेगा। परन्तु पक्षी वापस आया। वह सितम्बर के कन्धे पर बैठा। उसने इसके हाथ से खाना खाया। उसने उसकी खातिर सुन्दर गाने गाये। शहजादी ने अपनी खिड़की दिन-रात खुली रखी। पक्षी जब भी चाहे आ या जा सकता था।

भाग्यशाली सितम्बर
शहजादी बहुत सुन्दर हो गई। राजा ने उसकी कम्बोडिया के राजा के साथ शादी कर दी। उसे शहर में सारे रास्ते सफेद हाथी पर ले जाया गया। परन्तु उसकी बहनें अपनी खिड़कियाँ कभी खोलकर नहीं सोईं। वे बहुत भद्दी हो गईं। राजा ने उनकी शादी अपने सलाहकारों के साथ कर दीं। उन्हें एक पौण्ड चाय और एक-एक स्यामी बिल्ली दे दी गई।
